Amusing Exchange with a Shareware Prospect
Some of our company’s software is distributed as shareware downloads, including our two most popular products, Activ E-Book Compiler (for making eBooks) and Cover Factory (for making 3D-style images of software boxes or ebook covers, etc.). The idea of shareware is, the users can try a limited version of the software for free, but to get all the features they must pay up. I thought people knew that - that was until an amusing email exchange today, which I’ve summarized below:-
Prospect’s Email: I downloaded and am using the free version of your software, but limitation X is annoying me, is there anyway round it?
My Reply Email: Yes, pay for the full version, and that limitation is completely removed.
Prospect’s Response: I was hoping for a way that didn’t involve paying. Do you know any sites where I can get cracks* for your software?
* For those who don’t know, a "crack" is an unauthorized modification to software, allowing it to be copied/used in ways that violate the License Agreement and/or copyright.

I’ll extend the dialog:
- excuse me sir, can i have the keys to your car so i can steal it?
- unfortunately no, because this car is mine and I am not interested in loosing my properties.
- oh, really? In that case, could you recommend me a gangster bands, which will help me to drive away your car?
:)))))
